I'm still in diplomatic discussion mode so won't spill
the beans yet. However, the 'production manager' I spoke to claims that all
images they receive are 'colour balanced', as they 'have lots of different
output devices'.

Dear Richard

I don't understand what the production manager means. What is the relevance of their receiving colour balanced images got to do with number of output devices?

The fact that I was happy with the shots when they arrived
didn't seem to interest him. I told him I had a calibrated workflow and he
said that even so, 'all monitors are different'.

That is if I may say so the common 'cop out' handed out by those who do not have a competent grasp of a colour managed workflow, even at it's most basic and do not have one in place.... full stop. If they did, they would realize such a statement was irrelevant because the first step is to calibrate and profile your monitor....of course they all look different without that. The same as every TV set looks different!

I've sent my client the perfect prints I got from both Boots and Phill Heywood (thanks again), and she will then confront the lab herself.

After which I'll name them.

Good man. BTW I thought the suggestion, was it Mike Wilkinson's to go to Boots was absolutely brilliant.

Cheers

Richard
