Second reaction... I've installed the machine with a firewire connection on Windows 2000. Speed is now very good. I've just batch scanned four transparencies at 5400ppi and 16 bit with ICE enabled as a background task. I didn't time this exactly but I estimate that it only took around 20 minutes max. For that resolution and quality this is pretty acceptable.
Particularly if you are doing this in the background while doing that darned paperwork.
