I recently purchased a Nikon D100 and have been unable to open the raw NEF file.<snip>

Hi James. In Nikon View 6 which should have come with your camera there is an icon in the window menu bar that looks like a piece of paper with a pencil on it. <snip>Shooting RAW is the only way to the maximum quality as far as I'm concerned quite apart from all the latitude and other get out of jail free attributes that come with RAW use.

Thanks to Patrick and Geoff for your help. I found that my problem was the NEF file itself. I'm not sure why it was corrupted but I have now found that if I shoot about 5 NEF files, perhaps only 2 of them will be on the card when I transfer them to the computer. Since they are larger than jpgs I suppose that they take longer to move to the memory card but nothing says "transfering" or blinks to let me know its not finished. I have taken several in succession and recieved no warning to wait for transfer. I can find no mention in the manual of a time delay.

Oh, I was successful in opening the files that did transfer and I did download Adobe's RAW plugin. Now where are my missing images. I have the camera with me and will shoot some random shots today to test more.
