James, Sounds like maybe you have a problem with the camera. You should be able to shoot sequences of at least 4 shots in RAW mode before the buffer fills up and the camera says enough!
Thanks to Patrick and Geoff for your help. I found that my problem was the NEF file itself. I'm not sure why it was corrupted but I have now found that if I shoot about 5 NEF files, perhaps only 2 of them will be on the card when I transfer them to the computer. Since they are larger than jpgs I suppose that they take longer to move to the memory card but nothing says "transfering" or blinks to let me know its not finished. I have taken several in succession and recieved no warning to wait for transfer.
