Thanks Rodolpho but I tried both and neither worked. Tim Impress has the answer. It's the E-TTL pre flash which seems to be the problem. I have just managed to find the manual for the 420EX only to discover it's only in French (even though I bought it new at Jessops) I have managed to work that it's possible to turn off the 'E' bit of the TTL but not How to turn it off. If anyone has one of these are a manual in English I'd appreciate any info.
