The '500' service is enough for most purposes, but your mileage may vary. If you are simply sending small files to your webspace and similar sized attachments via email, the slower upload may well not be any barrier.

512K Downloads are fast enough for System Upgrades and much shareware, program patches and for surfing the Web.

would anybody reccomend staying with their ISP rather than
going to BT?
I would advise anyone satisfied with their current ISP to stick with them, they hit BT harder than you ever can and generally they answer the phone quicker and you deal with humans based in the UK! However, if you enjoy waiting for hours listening to recorded music and voices, and enjoy being passed along the line and cut off abruptly after all this, then move to BT.

I would be very grateful if anybody
could recommend hardware and software requirements, firewall etc....
Undoubtedly try to go for a router, possibly even Airport to ensure that all your machines get the speed boost. Netgear and DLink are suppliers of sound equipment.

Someone mentioned Alcatel; their higher end stuff may be ok, but my experience of the weird green manta ray USB thingy was so disastrous that I managed to have my money refunded and I got a Netshuttle, but since Hermstedt have retreated to Germany, I can no longer recommend them.

If you do plan to change, I can unequivocally recommend Dircon (Netscalibur) although their change of ownership to Claranet recently may mean that this could change. I have never waited longer than two minutes before speaking to someone, and have rarely found someone who did not understand Macs.

Welcome to Broadband.
