The sidecar data does work... though as I mentioned earlier this does lock you into the use of Adobe Camera Raw for the processing later. You could always run versions this way, embed the metadata into a TIFF and save. Then take the same RAW file over to another Raw processor (like C1) and process it there... then use the "metadata injection" function in the Photoshop file browser to push the XMP file from the photoshop processed file into the TIFF.
