I've not had to buy external drives for a couple of years but I do now, so I guess I'm out of touch. I've used (until now) extremely reliable LaCie 40gB drives and would just replace them with whatever the current model is except I recall LOTS of problems on this list with LaCie drives, from portables losing data, not being seen by the Macs, problems with BigDiscs and Jaguar/Panther, and so on.

Can anyone comment on the current situation, or recommend an alternative.

Mike, I have a 160Gb LaCie external drive and, although I've only had it for around six months, I've had no trouble with it on OS X (Panther). It mounted on the Desktop straight out of the box, I reformatted it using the OS X Disk Utility, and it's just run ever since. I'm very pleased with it, and will probably buy another soon.
