That's the correct procedure to use for CIS operating on printers without
chips like the 1160 / 1200 etc. You are fooling the printer into thinking
you have changed the cartridges, as it (with normal cartridges) detects the
cartridge-lid has been opened and assumes you have changed the used
cartridge for a full one.

It is recommended that you remove both sponges from black and colour
positions, before replacing them, so it thinks you have replaced both carts.
In the long run, this will save you ink in clean cycles that are run after
such cartridge replacement.
