I have asked the same question (ie if anyone other than Bruce of course) has had any success with this method - the absence of any positive responses does not bode well. Having said that, I have found that I can get an acceptable calibration by comparing visually the dowloaded target (converted to my working colour space) with the shot image of the target adjusted using the calibration sliders in PS RAW Converter. Bruce also refers to this technique but, like you, I have had no success in working on the RGB values alone. BTW, I've also downloaded the 30-day trial version of C1 Pro and can see the benefit of its batch handling capabilities but I don't find it in the least bit intuitive and certainly not up with CS RAW converter in the file handling (in particular file re-naming) stakes. For the moment I shall continue to "try out" C1 and put my initial concerns down to my own lack of experience but it doesn't bode well so far. (No doubt Nick will pick up on this one!).
