Hello List Mum
I have a niggling problem that I hope someone on this can answer, assuming its Ok with you or I should be asking elsewhere.
I have been selling my prints as 'Art' for around 15 years now on a modest scale through Galleries, personal contact, website etc. For the past 3+ years (I think) these have been printed first on an 1160 and then a 1290 using Lyson inks and media. I use the soft fine art paper by Lyson which has a nice textured effect that my customers seem to like and apart from the bare minimum of explanation the process there has never been any need to justify the method of printing or origination of the image, I currently use a D60. I will be participating in a 2 week countywide promotion of the arts in Somerset during September - this is a biennial event which is well promoted and has been very successful for me in the past. Since the previous event in 2002 public awareness regarding what is loosely called 'digital' has increased massively and it seems that everyone thinks that all they need to do is buy an Epson and print away, and of course they are all experts at Photoshop :-) Sometimes I do try and explain about monitor calibration, printer profiles etc that we all have to have but mostly I don't bother.
However, I feel that I now need to offer some kind of explanation/justification of the 'digital' thing to support my work, the prices I charge (around 60 per A3print, mounted, unframed), and professional photography in general. I had thought of approaching Jack Lowe direct but decided to test the water with you first. Any comments would be much appreciated please.
