IMHO
Barrel distortion in my example of the Canon 24-70mm L is not obvious and the lens is certainly very sharp. Of course I can't compare it with Nikon lenses. At 24mm I would say that this is a very sharp lens. I havent looked critically at other focal lengths but have used it fairly extensively and would never complain about the sharpness. I'm using it with a Kodak SLR/c.

Take the Canon EF 24-70mm f 2.8L USM, the barrel
distortion is very bad, esp. when you consider how much it costs. Plus that
lens is always a bit soft on the left side I feel. Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 is
incredible, I find it sharper and shows less distortion than Canons 17-40mm
or 16-35mm. The longer lenses from Canon are great however, the 70-200mm IS
f/2.8 being my favourite.
If you are not stressed, I would wait until Photokina to see both how the
new Fuji S3 Pro is turning out and who knows, maybe Nikon will surprise us
all and announce that they are back in the race with Canon?
Chris,
Thanks. Yes, I will wait for Photokina.
I have no use for zooms or lens speed, though I had considered buying the
cheaper Canon F4.0 short zoom. F2.8/F4.0 primes are fine for me, so I
presume that barrel distortion would be less likely, whether Canon or
Nikon(?)
Thanks again.
