Did you send back the power supply for them to check out? If that is faulty, too much voltage may present itself at the laptop, resulting in more power to be dissipated through heat. Or worse still it might see off the CPU, motherboard, or hard drive or whatever :-(

Thanks for your suggestions. They specifically requested that the power supply was not sent back...and yes I am not going to give up<G>
Thanks also to Pete Jenkins. The first time they had it back they said that the CPU was full of dust, but I know that was B*****ks because I had already cleaned it out and there was minimal dust in the cooling system!
