The similarity between lens focal length & diagonal is mere coincidence.
The true measure of a "normal" focal length lens is one where the image
in the viewfinder is the same "size" as the image seen without a camera.


Test by holding a camera such that you can see through it with one eye,
and see past it with the other eye. Alternately close one eye then the
other. Your lens is "normal" if the two views are the same size. If the
view through the camera is smaller, you have a "wide angle" lens. If the
view through the camera is bigger, you have a "telephoto" lens.
