I think the logic goes something like this (for want of a better word - I'll just say "burglar") :-
Burglar NOT there = no one gets hurt! Burglar has gun, owner doesn't = Burglar shouldn't be there to begin with, owner at disadvantage. Burglar doesn't have gun, owner does = Burglar still shouldn't be there, advantage to owner.
