Point taken. Several people mentioned the same thing.
When I originally signed the contract, the hotel had that poor excuse of
a bar in working order. When I returned for the walk through, they were
doing construction. I asked them "Will the bar be finished and
restocked by the time of our conference in three weeks?" They assured
me that it would. It wasn't much but it was supposed to be something.
The Mariott down the street had much nicer facilities, and a full bar,
and a full restaurant right on the premises. They also charged a lot
more for the conference space, plus required a lot more for the food
minimums, plus required that I guarantee double the hotel rooms, and the
rooms were $89 per night (instead of $69). Basically a lot more risk
for me when I didn't know what was going to happen.
If we do it again, we'll do better in this area.

Kim and I were talking that if we do this again next year, we'd have
a place in mind ahead of time, with printed maps/directions, and
phone numbers of local attendees that could help out if attendees get

Not to be persnickety (now there's a word I don't get to use too
often!), but something in the same place as where the attendees are
staying is important. People who are going to their first conference
might feel out of place and not want to "impose" on the others, so by
having everyone in a central location onsite it will be much more
likely that someone will stumble into us and join in the conversation.
I enjoyed the conversations I had the two nights I went out with the
group, but I missed meeting and talking to those who weren't at my table.
