I've kept my mouth shut on this one, but one thing I have to say is that the majority of projects out there are pointless migration and they are done because somebody is attempting to justify their existence.

I have said since day one that if everybody would forget that they:
1. Had a computer
2. Develop paper forms and then automate these forms after they have made sure that the paper forms did what they needed, then a lot of pointless development would be eliminated because the language of choice is pointless if you stick to the basics...

What does a "new version" buy you? What are you missing, besides that "new version smell"?

Ed, if someone wanted you to take your existing app from VFP into python,
would you still cry foul for VFP?

It's not a matter of crying foul for VFP; it's a question of pointless migration. If the VFP app did everything they need, but they decided to invest the money to upgrade it to Dabo so that it would do exactly the same thing that the VFP version could do, then yes, I would call that very, very stupid. If there was a legitimate business need, such as the ability to work cross-platform natively, then no, it would make sense.

I'm asking you what is the business need that requires the migration. "Running on the newest version" doesn't mean jack.
