I'm curious: do you experience similar feelings of revulsion when an
American proposes nuking Iran?- I suppose we could ignore Iran if it was just another authoritarian regime oppressing it's own people. But the fact is they are arming the Taliban, ,Shia insurgents in Iraq and Hizbullah in Lebanon while trying to build a nuclear bomb and calling for wiping Israel off the map of the middle east , any of which makes them a justifiable candidate for vilification by civilized people everywhere. As for feelings of revulsion, the images of beheadings from Iraq have been deeply disturbing, people talking about nuclear strikes is somehow more abstract and less immediate. There is savagery going on everywhere: executions of teenage boys while the police stand idle in Haiti a year or so ago, they were playing football, told to lie flat on the ground then summarily executed, the unspeakable brutality of Sierra Leone, massacre and carnage in Darfur etc. And yes we are guilty of it too. The massacre of the young recruits of the Islamic courts in Somalia earlier this year was savage and extreme. The Islamic courts were a benign influence on the failed waste land of Somalia and much more humane than the gangster clans acting on behalf of the CIA in the horn of Africa. The west has most certainly got it wrong in places. The US army in Iraq is not known for its politeness. The quiet shocked voices of the mothers of Iraq and Gaza should remind us however that there is beauty and intelligence and goodness among the ordinary people who have suffered so much in all of this. But global terror is an evil that has to be confronted and the radical islamists are the major agents of that terror. Defeating them will require terrible things to be done in our name. Where does civilization stand in all of this? Same place it's always been.
