Thanks to all for your comments. I guess my original goal of getting
some 'hard numbers' based on 'qualified sources' was a bit nonsensical,
since such a beast doesn't really exist - it's all subjective to each
company/employee anyway.

As it happens, yesterday I had my one year review (a year and a half
late). It went exceptionally well. I had to practically beg for some
criticism and the only thing they came up with is that I could do better
at keeping people in the loop on what I am working on.

Those of you that know me from the ProLinux forum (thanks again Ed!!)
know that I frequently struggle in my job. I'm responsible for systems I
can barely grasp how they work, and writing programs and such in
languages that I can just muddle thru at best. Other than the PC
machines here, virtually *everything* I do here is new to me having come
from a FoxPro-only world. When Matt has a bad day, we ALL have a bad
day... How I got this job in the first place is a mystery to me, other
than I have a technical background and am a cyclist...

Generally I'm happy here, but I have my bad days just like everybody
else. My stress levels can get out of control at times, and we talked
about this in my review. They suspected what was going on, but until I
verbalized it for them and described the pressure I'm constantly under,
they seemed to finally understand what it's like to sit in this chair. I
almost cried a few times.... And being on call 24/7 doesn't help....

There is a young guy working out in Inventory that reportedly has an
extensive IT background, and the hope is that we can work him more and
more into the day to day stuff that I have to deal with, and perhaps
eventually free me up to do what I do best - software development. We'd
love to rewrite our home grown enterprise-wide design/manufacturing
system, and I reminded them that they have the good fortune of already
having a software developer on staff... that lit up a few faces... (At
the moment I'm leaning towards doing Python/Dabo - but we'll see).

Working from home is actually an option I don't take advantage of very
often. I get to wear t-shirts and sweat pants to work every day,
sometimes I don't shave for a week at a time... I ride my bike at
lunchtime and like everybody else stink up the place... our building is
mostly uninsulated, and in the winter we freeze and the summers we bake.
And we have a mice infestation problem... I have to wear a mask when I
blow out a computer the dust is so incredibly bad around here...

Other perks are being part of the industry and enjoying pro deals on all
sorts of bike goodies and computer stuff...

Back to the salary issue - it came up at the end. They were expecting it
and we had a good conversation. Being a manufacturer we often suffer
from the same ebb and flow as everyone else, so right now isn't a good
time for me to get the significant raise they proposed. Plus the three
people sitting in on my review aren't drawing a paycheck right now, so
giving Matt a big chunk isn't a great thing... but they were very
receptive to the idea, and come March I should have a 99.9% chance of
getting at least 10% - and quite possibly more. Plus we still have our
profit sharing that because of my salary I get a pretty big chunk of...

Maybe this is Too Much Information to be sharing.... one thing I like
about belonging to this list for the last.... 8 years???... is that we
can share our experiences with each other. I learn from you, you learn
from me. I say we're all in this together...
