Why not? It's what we do with alcohol. The government gets the
revenue from alcohol, instead of bootleggers. When was the last time
you heard of a bootlegging operation? Not since Prohibition, because
there is no money in it. Drug dealers do it for one reason: money.
They don't have any theoretical motivation to corrupt anyone; they
just want to make a financial killing. You remove that possibility,
and you remove the crime surrounding the addiction.
People still fuck up their lives big time with alcohol; making it
legal and taxed doesn't guarantee that it will be used responsibly.
But people with alcohol problems know that they can seek treatment
without fear of being arrested; the same cannot be said for addicts of
drugs that are currently illegal. By removing the financial component
from the drug world, you remove the crime and the underground nature.
Then and only then can we ever expect things to get better.
