Most of the desktop apps like Open Office, Firefox, Thunderbirds, Gimp, Nautilus File Browser, etc are comparable/compatible with/to Microsoft offerings. Most of the Linux Daemon that can be installed from the Add/Remove menu, loaded at boot time, and run in the background, (eg comparable to window OS services), run right out of the box. It can take some work to specialize a particular daemon, but windows isn't any better. Is MSSQL any easier than PostgreSQL, for example?
The Linux OS is very modular so there are thousand of applications that can be integrated into the Apache Web Server, for example, and each one may have a few commands that need to be entered in the configuration files, but this isn't a big deal. Source Code is available for all the application, and most Daemons can be compiled modularly to hold only the features/functions needed, but again this isn't difficult after its done a few time and one become familiar with the application, and this feature adds great functionality to Linux. There is only one version of everything in Windows, and its binary. Are you having trouble installing or using any particular application or Linux Daemon/Service?
