>> Which of those two sounds easier?<<

When you put it this way...Linux rocks! <g>

First, I appreciate your FUD stoppage. I greatly dislike it too.

You seriously had me at "I have no interest in convincing you."

But then you tried. And honestly, I liked your simplified example and get
the point you are trying to make. But it is the wrong example if one is
going to convince someone that Linux rocks. Here is why: what serious
professional app designed for the masses is not going to have a simple
installer that steps you through a couple of simple steps to get the app on
the machine? This is not an OS thing, it is a software vendor thing.

Google Thunderbird, click Feeling Lucky button, download, run installer.
Took me exactly 20 seconds and is something even my mom could have done on
Windows and she rarely loads applications. No searching/finding the
downloaded file (FireFox provides me a list of the downloads when I click in
the download link). Unzip? Unzip what? You should have at least picked an
app that followed the pain you described.

This feature you described in Linux sounds cool. Will Fedora and Ubuntu
automatically know about a custom app I develop, and where to download it?
Sounds like a sophisticated OS updater, but generically open to all
applications, or close to InstallShield's Update Manager with search
capability.
