Sheesh. You *do* realize that there are GUI tools for every common
hardware/environment setting? And that they are no harder to use than
the corresponding Windows versions of the same tools?
Or are you implying that only Linux has hardware issues?
On my old Vaio I couldn't even get the Sony-made wireless PC card to
work under Windows. I wiped the drive and installed Ubuntu, and both
of my wireless PC cards worked without having to tweak anything. I
could even swap 'em out without having to stop some service, as I had
to do under Windows.
Does this anecdote from 5 years ago now justify me trashing Windows'
hardware support in general?

You're really reaching now. Ubuntu will prompt you for your password
if you attempt to do something that requires admin-level permission.
You cannot log in as root at all, unless you happen to know your way
around Linux admin utilities, but since we're discussing average Joes,
that's not the case.
Maybe it's just me, but I would be embarrassed to publicly trumpet my
ignorance. Yeah, it must be a personal quirk.
