Hi Michael,

Most perceptive, I am indeed. Turning into a screaming liberal religious
righter in my old age.

I think the police should ask for "papers", as it is being put, and
respond according to the papers they are given, if any. If the papers
are valid, no problemo, as the detainee would understand it. Profiling?
By all means, irresponsible not to profile.

If the papers are bogus or there are no papers then the person should be
returned to his/her country of origin. If he/she is ill he/she should be
stabilized and returned to a medical facility in his/her country of origin.

En route to wherever the detainees should be given reasonable food,
drink, clothing as needed and be made comfortable in the transit vehicle
- blankets, pillows or whatever is reasonable and humane.

Not only that, citizen homeless and insane need to be sheltered. Our
response to the homeless and the insane need not be perfect, Geraldo
Rivera notwithstanding, but it must be reasonable given our resources.

My position is too left for the right, and too right for the left. Too bad.
