There is one other option for those who want gigabyte network speed.
Gigabyte speed could only be utilized within a hard wired LAN; because,
the gateway to the internet is pretty well limited to what your ISP
provides, which is usually under 10Mbps speeds, and wireless is more
unstable and lower speed than wired. For the internet gateway, a
100Mbsp router/switch/firewall/etc is all you need, and if your DSL or
cable model limits are somewhere around 1.5 to 2.0 Mbps upstream speed
and 3.0 to 5.0 Mbps downstream speed, then even a 10Mbps router would be
adequate.

You could get gigabyte speed within the local network, (eg LAN), by
adding a gigabyte switch. All your computers/devices with a gigabyte
Ethernet port could be connected over cat6 cable to the gigabyte ports
of the switch. Other lower bandwidth equipment could be connected to
either the router or the switch, but all devices properly equipped for
1000Mbps connected to the 1000Mbps switch would communicate by
gigabyte. The gigabyte switch would be connected to the fast Ethernet,
(eg 100Mbps), router/switch/gatewayfirewall, which would be connected to
the DSL/Cable modem. All devices on the gigabyte switch would degrade
to the fast ethernet, (eg 100Mbps), speeds when going out the 100Mbps
gateway into the internet via the router, which really doesn't matter,
as the speed limits place on the connection by fast ethernet, or really
by the ISP, is the bottleneck here.
