It depends on what you want to do. If you want to be able to pick up
your laptop and take it out on the porch to enjoy the breeze, you'll
want wifi. Which adapter (802.11b, g, or n) the laptop has determines
what you need. If you don't want to run cables all over the place, you
can do it all wirelessly these days. My preference is to wire the
stationary items (desktop 'puter, printers) and use wireless for the
laptops. However, our needs seem to be greater than yours - three
levels of computers, mobile laptops, business home office, etc.

I'm a big fan of print servers for the printers, to remove the
requirement that the associated computer be running in order to print.

If it's compatible with your needs, the D-Link DIR-655 is a bargain.
