Yes, a router/switch could network all your local computer/devices and 
act as a single point of entry into the internet for everybody, (eg a 
gateway).  I'm running a Netgear FVG318 and I have been very happy with it.

You might also do a search on newegg.  They offer a good selection of 
routers/switches to meet the needs of just about any user.
