"We live as second class citizens in our own country. Our daughters are abducted." According to statistics provided by the Hindu Council of Pakistan, 93 percent of the country's Hindus live in Sindh, where recent incidents of harassment, abduction and forced conversion have forced many of them to leave. "We used to move to Karachi because it was safer," Mohan Lal says. "But now, the poor have gone to India and the rich have moved to Europe, Canada or the US." "The tragedy is that our girls, 14 and 15 year old, are kidnapped and illegally confined until they convert," says Jethanand Kohistani, president of the Hindu Council of Pakistan. "Incidents of looting of Hindus have also multiplied in the recent past. Many of our friends have been abducted for ransom." Several Hindus abducted from Quetta 10 months ago have not been recovered so far, he said. Others have been missing from Tando Allahyar for two months. "I don't see the government being serious at all," he says. "There is misuse of authority, misuse of the blasphemy law, and we do not feel safe. That is the reason why people are migrating." Kohistani said a large number of Hindus had returned from India in the past after the conditions improved in 1989. Half of the Hindu community of Pakistan is poor and has no representation, said Dr Ramesh Kumar, the patron in chief of the Hindu Council. "We want reserved seats in the Parliament," he said. "We had told Maula Bux Chandio that we think the People's Party has abandoned us. What do we do now? Join the MQM?" He said he had also asked Rehman Malik to form a committee that includes minority representatives to propose amendments in laws. "We need to separate conversion from kidnapping," he said. "Why are only Hindu women abducted and Muslim women are not?" A large number of Hindus have migrated to other countries because of fear. Among them is Karachi's Chawla family. "Yes there is discrimination and there have been threats," says Mukesh Chawla, "but that is how it is for all Pakistanis. There is Rinkle Kumari, but there is also Mukhtaran Mai. There is discrimination against women especially. Hindus are as safe as anyone else in Pakistan, and that is why we are leaving." "Over 400 Pakistani Hindus came down here via Thar Express last month," said Hindu Singh Sodha, president of India's Seemant Lok Sangathan, that works for the rights of displaced Hindus. But after an apparent move by the Pakistani government, only four people reached India last week, he added. India's External Affairs Ministry confirms it has received thousands of immigration applications, particularly political asylum on the grounds of persecution. "Pakistan has made it mandatory for the Hindus traveling to India to give an undertaking to the officials that they will come back," Sodha said. But the Pakistani government has not shown the same urgency against the abduction and forced conversion of Hindu girls. In a high profile case of the abduction of 19-year-old Rinkle Kumari with the apparent backing of a PPP leader, Hindus have already given up hope in the government. "The state has failed, the PPP has failed, and we feel dejected," said Dr Ramesh Kumar. "We need fair treatment and equality. We are as much Pakistanis as anyone else. We want the government to remove all the hate material against Hindus in the curriculum, and reform all discriminatory laws."
