I just checked, and the message gets through to my disk OK - through 
a truly sick combination of Exim, procmail and nmh's version of 
rcvstore.  If I use the nmh 'repl' command to reply, rather than 
exmh, the '�' character (which might or might not appear here :-) 
gets zapped.  Aha!
