i wonder what is wrong with
#!/bin/sh
cd
mkdir djbsrc
cd djbsrc
fetch ftp://koobera.math.uic.edu/www/software/qmail-1.03.tar.gz
tar xzf qmail-1.03.tar.gz
cd qmail-1.03
less INSTALL
cat << EOF
###
### please read the other INSTALL.* files in the source dir
### set up the correct users, then press return
###
EOF
make setup check
cat << EOF
###
### thanks, now consider installing daemontools and ucspi-tcp for
### an optimal execution environment
###
EOF

well, if you gotta throw this into a Makefile to be perfectly content
_and_ patch the source to install into different paths, then you're
hosed anyway -- depending on the number of systems you administer.
IMVHO, qmail belongs into /var/qmail -- and that's where it is on all
the machines i log on to. no matter if it's *BSD/Slowlaris/HP-UX/AIX or
whateverIX[tm]... dan's policy just reduces TCO in a very simple manner,
just as a side effect of his way of installing things.
if the people don't understand that fact, it's their personal problem.

the recent drop of ipfilter is in no way 'justifiable'. it means: one
more stupid packetfilter to deal with, to learn, to debug ;-)
speaking for myself i don't want to deal with a myriad of ruleset
languages or use rather buggy meta definition languages or filter
creation tools.

SECURE_OTHER_UNIX=FreeBSD-RELENG_4
export SECURE_OTHER_UNIX

cheers,
/k
