hello,
I am not using the submission port ( is that 587 ? but I am sure most people will be sending on 25 ..yes?)
Yes, 25 is the standard port. With spam being on the rise, many people and ISPs are now using a submission port (Earthlink is even using one now). QMT uses port 587. If you open port 587 in your firewall you users will be able to send emails through this port (after configuring Outlook or OE to use port 587 for SMTP) without being kicked for being on a DHCP address or whatever. Or you could not use the blacklist that considers all DHCP addresses as bad. Your choice. Email from other servers will come in on port 25 and be subjected to the blacklist checks.
the test account settings returns the following errors ( client is Outlook ) " ... the specified server was found , but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct. To access these settings close this diag, then click more settings on the advanced tab..."
Sounds like you have something misconfigured. Are you using SSL? Do you have the ports open in your firewall(s)?
also what would folks sending from google mail have thier mail bounced back?..could this be related?
Possibly. Let's determine what the problem is and fix it first. Then you can look at the next problem.
also... I need to expand my understanding of how Spamassasin is working ... i see wher some spam is marked ***SPAM*** I think these are messages that are scored as 5 . BUT are there some spam messages that are scored at a Higer number that are just tossed- never delivered?
Correct, and it depends on how you have your system set up. Did you enable the spambox?
