Hi Guys

I love to teach DB development from Graeme Summer’s Developing Databases
with Access (a really old edition now), and do it the old fashioned way;
with a whiteboard and marker.

Our own IPT subject offering has died; however, I’m still impressed by ORM
and how it can be used the logically render reality (ordered discourses).

I’ve done a little digging, and I think that the The ORM Foundation
<http://www.ormfoundation.org/> may be of help; they refer to two tools
that superseded visiomodeler; i.e.,

* Microsoft Visio for Enterprise Architects; then
* NORMA (Natural ORM Architect for
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NORMA> Visual Studio); I’ll be looking very
closely at this tool

Also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Object-Role_Modeling contains more tools

I hope this helps

Kind Regards

Ross Hunter

I have a very knowledgeable Year 11 student doing IPT. He was saying that
only certain processors will support XP mode under Windows 7, so I asked him
to give me a list.

It is attached. I haven't confirmed this information so use it at your
peril. But it does appear that you need both the right version of Windows 7
(Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate) AND a compatible processor to do this.

Best to visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx
There is a program you can download that tells you if your hardware can run
XP mode. See attached jpg

I would double that 2c to make 4c and continue to run XP under virtual pc to
get access to Visiomodeller.

IPT would not be the same without it.

My 2c worth:

I have found nothing that comes close to Visiomodeller in its ability to
create CSD’s from the elementary fact sentences including nested fact types.

It also encourages the use of population checks which for ORM are the real
secret to success.

The issue now though is getting it to function under Windows 7.

While ORM may not be ‘industry standard’ (many still use ER), I believe it
is an excellent design tool at this stage of the development of students
considering Information Systems as a career. I believe it is worth keeping.

Cheers,

Paul

G'day Jonathan,

When you say you use DIA for CSD work, do you mean you use it for ORM with
entity object and value objects etc to create a full conceptual schema? Do
the students manually create every object and role on the diagram and join
the roles and put the role descriptions in the boxes...?

If so, then this is why I like the 'decrepit' VisioModeler - it is the best
software around for creating a CS diagram directly from fact sentences AND
mapping the CS straight to a data dictionary. All of its functionality has
been ported to Visio, but somehow only the Enterprise Architect version.
They've left us educators out in the cold with the now unsupported
VisioModeler.

If DIA requires the creation of the diagrams by hand, then I may as well use
the diagramming functions in MS Word 2007.

I have downloaded DIA and will have a closer look at it.

Thanks for all the tips.

Hi all,

I use DIA a lot for 11 and 12 IPT in our CSD work. It is very simple to use
(students are producing real work quickly) , and it actually works as a full
function program for free.

I haven't had as much luck using it for NS diagrams. Has anyone used DIA for
NS diagrams (algorthim work). Is there a template that works that people
know of?

As an aside, for NS drawing, I have found that NSD Editor (NSD.EXE) is a
BRILLIANT start, but the version I have (at least) will not do CASE
statements for example, so its use is limited. Anyone know how to work
around this?
