Luke, it should get much better as time goes on and your body gets used to the
new change. At 1st when I got mine--me and my wife could not stand to even look
at it, but after a while it starts to just seem normal and don't bother us
hardly at all anymore. In the early stages it might even bleed a bit more. To
care for mine---we take a piece of gauge and with scissors cut it to the
center---round or square guage pad should work----then we apply some triple
anti-biotic cream around the meaty area and then slide the guage pad in until
the tube is near the center. Then just apply some tape to help hold it over the
open area... this will kind of keep it covered and absorb any blood or leakage
it may have. After some time it will probably be less and less on the blood or
drainage. Also if you tape, rotate the tape to different spots each change so
the same spots don't get too irritated by the tape---although I never had a
problem with that. We change my catheter once a
month --- But we change the large bags I use twice a month. Many Doctors
change once a month but some do it more often. The doctor and his nurses taught
my wife how to change my catheter and she has done it for all 7 years I've had
my supra-pubic---once a person learns to change it it's very simple.

I'm a c-5/6 quad incomplete with quite a bit of feeling. i had to stop doing
in-and-out cathing because it bcame painful and i was having to do it too
often. so i started doing the indwelling for about the past 3yrs. but i can
still get erections so i recently decided to go from the indewlling through the
penis to a supra pubic tube. it hasn't quite been a week since i had my
surgery but it's hard for me to look at it because i'm a little freaked out
knowing i have this tube going through my skin. also i've always had really
intense tone in my legs which makes my abs tighten up and now that i have the
tube it feels really funky when my muscles tighten. i know its only been a
short while since my surgery but there is a lot of discomfort. does this go
away? I go to see my doctor in a couple of weeks and hope tell him that i'm
doing well.
