Hi Luke,
I've had a SP for over two years now. I have compleat feeling but no
tone. It took me about 3 weeks to get rid of the pain associated with
the SP. Now there is no pain what so ever. I have my PCAs change my SP
every 3 weeks - it's very easy and takes about 10 minutes. It's almost
as easy as changing a belly button ring. The only care I do is wipe
around the entrance with a antibacterial wet wipe twice a day and apply
antibacterial ointment at those times. I do not use gauze pads or
anything like that as my opening does not leak.
As for the discomfort - since you have a balloon in your bladder, you
may feel as if you have to pee all the time but you get use to the
feeling as it is not very intense. Also, the balloon which is inflated
inside your bladder so the tube won't fall out can be inflated from 1 to
10 CCs. The docs and nurses use 10CCs but I use 5 and it seems more
comfortable and still stays in. Ask your doc if you can fiddle with the
inflation amounts - who knows maybe you can get by with 2.
By the way, I use an 18 french cath.

I'm a c-5/6 quad incomplete with quite a bit of feeling. i had to
stop doing in-and-out cathing because it bcame painful and i was
having to do it too often. so i started doing the indwelling for
about the past 3yrs. but i can still get erections so i recently
decided to go from the indewlling through the penis to a supra pubic
tube. it hasn't quite been a week since i had my surgery but it's
hard for me to look at it because i'm a little freaked out knowing i
have this tube going through my skin. also i've always had really
intense tone in my legs which makes my abs tighten up and now that i
have the tube it feels really funky when my muscles tighten. i know
its only been a short while since my surgery but there is a lot of
discomfort. does this go away? I go to see my doctor in a couple of
weeks and hope tell him that i'm doing well.
