Hi T,

If you are an "average quad" the good news is your upper body should have
normal to above normal bone density.  The bad news--you are probably at the
fracture threshold in your lower body.  Osteoporosis means you have a chance of
breaking a bone from a "standing fall" means 32% or less than 100% bone density
of a healthy sanding 30-year-old male.

Fracture threshold is around 50% bone loss and you run the risk of fracturing a
bone from a sloppy transfer or even taking off socks, or rolling over in bed.
I know, I'm 25 years post injury --a T10 complete para, complete with 4
femur/hip fractures.

You can read all the info in the article I wrote in New Mobility
magazine--along with input from the leading researcher on the planet in SCI and
osteoporosis, Dr. Douglas Garland.
The article is available at:

When the article opens up, scroll down to the end and double click on "read
more" in red and the entire article will open up.

Bob Vogel

My bone density is -4.3; so I have osteoporosis. Does anyone else have numbers
this low?  I am a c5-c6 21 yrs. post; a mere 44 year old male with what.... not
enough female hormones (ha-ha).
Thanks-

What your T-score means:

A T-score between +1 and -1 is normal bone density. Examples are 0.8, 0.2 and
-0.5.

A T-score between -1 and -2.5 indicates low bone density or osteopenia.
Examples are T-scores of -1.2, -1.6 and -2.1.

A T-score of -2.5 or lower is a diagnosis of osteoporosis. Examples are
T-scores of -2.8, -3.3 and -3.9.
