So does Flat Pack Macs and it's all on one page :).

The highest OS that will run on a Performa 47x is 8.1. If you get the
correct CD it is Universal but be aware that there are PowerPC CDs out
there and I don't know if they work on 68ks.

I only see two problems with that statement:
1. 7.5.5 is also free.
2. It's bunk IMHO. I run 7.6.1 on my LC475, with 12MB RAM, (it's the
same machine with a different sticker on the front) and it runs just
fine, it's not too slow at all. What is more it is much more stable than
earlier versions. 7.1 is too old to use the excuse of speed on an 040
machine, they are all capable of running 7.5 and 7.6 perfectly well, the
top end ones even run 8.1 (33 + 40MHz CPUs) pretty well. IMHO 7.6.1 is
the best OS for this machine, but if you don't want to go out and pay
$20 for a CD then 7.5.5 will suffice but is less stable by some mark.
The only thing that would make me consider OS 7.1 is a lack of RAM (less
than 8MB) and as Micheal has 36MB RAM, more than mine, and a 1GB hard
disk it is not really an issue in this case.
