I'd like to thank all of you who sent suggestions for my mother's Quadra 840AV. What I found is that if it is left unplugged for a couple of days, it does take longer to boot up than if it is left plugged in, but shut down. It takes longer to boot up from a plugged-in shut-down than a restart, but at least we know it will eventually come up and isn't dying. The PRAM reset didn't solve the behavior. I did find an old copy of TechTool v2 and installed that -- it found only finder date problems. So -- Mom will continue to use the Quadra until I get a new G4, then she'll inherit my G3. She needs something faster, as she is encountering such slow web-surfing as to really frustrate her.
Thanks again,
Deb
