What should it be?

A long time ago I just added people who also seemed to be working on
Quagga regularly as 'maintainers'. Over time that broke down a bit. So, how
/should/ things work?

Can you elaborate some on how things broke down under that model? My gut
says that if those who are actively contributing are willing to be a
maintainer then making them a maintainer seems like a logical step assuming there is a need for another maintainer. On the flip side if a maintainer is no longer active then maybe you have to pass their maintainership along to
someone else.

No need to “pass on”. Just remove after some timeout (with timeout probably
very long or none right now to avoid having too few maintainers, but
getting smaller once there are sufficient number of maintainers)

I do not think quagga should abandon its current model, I think we just
need a larger number of active maintainers.

Definitely agree on a larger number of maintainers. And I see quite a few regular folks on this list which are not maintainers, but are doing a very good job. I don’t know what the holding back is on getting some of them to
be maintainers.
Also, I would prefer to have the “becoming a maintainer” be a transparent
and open process (i.e. discussed/proposed on list and not just between
maintainers)

To push this even further, is there a reason why you (Daniel) or your colleague Donald or a person like Timos don’t want to be a maintainer? Or just nobody
ever asked or considered it?

Discuss... Work out the processes that would work best for everyone.
