Hi Mark, A empty HP pump won't lift fuel any height at all, a few inchs if you are lucky. Once it's primed it will lift higher but if that fuel drains out or you run out of petrol you will have to prime it again.
So it needs to be below the level of the fuel in a near full tank. Have you got a low pressure pump at the moment ? Have you still got the original carb petrol tank ? The hp pump is mounted some way above the fuel tank, could this be why it isn't drawing fuel through? It was mounted in the engine bay in order to keep the high pressure lines as short as possible. Should I move this to below the level of the fuel tank so it has a head of fuel to prime it? The swirl pot I have seems huge, it has 4 pipes into it and no instructions. It hasn't been fitted yet. Was the old engine (a 1.4 CVH wasnt't it) fuel injected ? If not then there won't be a lift pump in the tank. If you try running the high pressure pump directly from the fuel tank you will suffer fuel starvation on corners and roundabouts when the fuel level gets below half a tank or so. You either need to change the tank for an injection one with an internal swirl pot or fit an external swirl pot with a low pressure feed pump and a high pressure fuel pump. If you feed the fuel return from the engine back into the swirl pot then it won't matter that the high pressure pump is a lot higher flow than the low pressure pump. There is a school of thought though that it's better to feed the engine return into the fuel tank to keep the fuel cooler as you aren't recycling the excess fuel between the engine and swirl pot. I have the stock manifold on there at the moment. I bought the downpipe with lambda but minus cat from a scrappy the other day. today I got the bits to make the rest of the exhaust. How much do you want for the pipe you have? The exhaust that is about to go on is going to be cobbled together from an escort downpipe, puma middle section and the back boxes from a puma sport... the polite word is hybrid!! I managed to get the coil pack, exhaust bits and road speed sensor for £40 so quite pleased with that. We now have a spark but currently have no fuel getting through. I suspect that the lift pump has been disconnected from power somewhere during the mod. Just trying to find where in the loom I need to reconnect the power for this. I have concerns about whether this is going to be man enough to supply the hp pump (from a 3.0 senator!) or whether to try to remove the lift pump altogether. It is top mounted and I don't really want to drop the fuel tank if I can avoid it.
