I used the rubber cotton reels - might still have some in the garage - but found that the change, while it improved the gear change, didn't do enough to keep me happy. It was certainly an improvement, but my gearbox was so vague it was kind of pointless; the need to use two hands to get the box out of 5th, and a complete inability to self- centre on 3rd/4th plane in spite of much fettling of the gearstick bits and bobs did not endear it to me.
That, combined with a dodgy clutch and accelerator pedal action, was the major driver in causing me to stuff the Fiat engine/box in.
