That sounds like you had a mismatch between the gear linkage and the gearbox. Pre 1986 Mk2 Fiestas (and similar age Mk3/4 Escorts) had the gate for where you can move the gearlever (and hence the selectors in the gearbox) in the actual gearlever assembly.
After 1986 the gate is in the gearbox.

If you get both a gearlever and gearbox with gates in it's nigh on impossible to get them matched up. If you get both a gearlever and gearbox without gates then you get no postive location between the gears and can move the selectors into all sorts of incorrect positions.

Neither works very well at all.

I used the rubber cotton reels - might still have some in the garage -
but found that the change, while it improved the gear change, didn't
do enough to keep me happy. It was certainly an improvement, but my
gearbox was so vague it was kind of pointless; the need to use two
hands to get the box out of 5th, and a complete inability to self-
centre on 3rd/4th plane in spite of much fettling of the gearstick
bits and bobs did not endear it to me.

That, combined with a dodgy clutch and accelerator pedal action, was
the major driver in causing me to stuff the Fiat engine/box in.

Yes I replaced the nylon bushes in the linkage at the gear box end as
described in Zetecinside. It works a treat. I decided to use Stainless Bolts with the unthreaded shoulder the right length to fit between the bearings.

I left the Gearstick end unmodified and didn't need the rubber cotton reels.

Has anybody carried out the modification mentioned on one of the Fiesta
tuning websites (zetecinside?)

I was tempted to bin the joint and use a group4 escort steering joint that I
happened to have lying around, but the Fiesta mod looked more
straightforward.

The latter part of the mod involves using rubber bobbin mounts under the
gear lever to reduce the noise transmitted through the new linkage mech.

Is this necessary, or is it just due to the quickshift which he also fitted?

PS. If anybody is considering the mod, ebay has the same bearings for a
fraction of the price at RS.
