Ian, Even if you take the mounting box off, you will still have to remove the master cylinder from this to replace it, so the question is - Did someone weld the bolts to the inside of the housing so that you can take the master cylinder off without the bolts falling off inside the housing? If not, then you will have to take the mounting box off as well.
Also, you say that you will have to do this from inside the footwell - Do the bolts holding on the mounting box have captive nuts?
