I lived an hour from work thirty years ago and drove carb cars (there were 
few that weren't).

Like most of these things it was down to maintenance; if you didn't, they 
wouldn't... manual choke was always easiest; just pull the knob out 
depending how warm it was(n't) outside, one pump to prime the carb, and off 
you went. The starting procedure for an auto choke was similar: (1) replace 
auto choke with manual conversion; (2) start as above...

btw - you *can* flood an injection engine if you try hard; the best way is 
to allow it to run for only one or two revs and then inadvertently stop it. 
One way to clear it is to start it with the pedal to the metal which allows 
maximum air through the cylinders. Once it starts, though, you need your 
foot up sharpish if you prefer an engine instead of a grenade.
