I converted an electric auto choke to manual last year – I had problems
starting and when I took the auto choke casing off various metal fragments fell
out – definitely broken....

There we NO kits on the market but managed to find an old new stock kit that
fitted with some modifications.
The kit cost £5 plus time / effort and a pint for a mate who made up a new
bracket for me.

The alternative was £250 plus for a New Manual Choke Carb.

Subject: Re: [Quantum Owners] Auto Choke on 2+2

I lived an hour from work thirty years ago and drove carb cars (there were few
that weren't).

Like most of these things it was down to maintenance; if you didn't, they
wouldn't... manual choke was always easiest; just pull the knob out depending
how warm it was(n't) outside, one pump to prime the carb, and off you went. The
starting procedure for an auto choke was similar: (1) replace auto choke with
manual conversion; (2) start as above...

btw - you *can* flood an injection engine if you try hard; the best way is to
allow it to run for only one or two revs and then inadvertently stop it. One
way to clear it is to start it with the pedal to the metal which allows maximum
air through the cylinders. Once it starts, though, you need your foot up
sharpish if you prefer an engine instead of a grenade.

That sound IMPossible to live with!

I guess the carb design makes a big difference there, updraft being almost
(if not) impossible to flood and downdraft being the worst.

I can understand why 30 odd years ago it was very unusual to live, say, an
hour drive from your work, which now seems quite common. You just could not
rely on old cars to be reliable.
