A fault I suffered on the XR4x4 was a blocked fuel cap vent which made the car run strongly for a little while and then splutter and die. minutes later it would run normally........for a little while. Thanks all. Lots of useful info. Its been a very sporadic when it happens. Usually when it gets warm. Have never had any fuel smells. Looks like I'll have to change the short rubber connection between the tank & the 'metal' line to the front of the car. While I'm at it might change the metal line.
