i had a similar problem years ago with an xr3i, turned out to be wear and tear on the distributor contacts, rubbed the rotor on the ground and used a penknife on the cap terminals, went fine until i replaced the cap. carried one as a spare after that. another possibility is the electronic amplifier module mounted on the side of the disributor assembly. when faulty they usually start causing problems like cutting out when they get hot. i don't know how the tacho is off as they're normally a simple frequency meter taking a feed from the alternator. interesting, hope you get it sorted we'll be 'watching this space'
