Hi Chris and All, I have spent most of my motoring life non-computerised so always check my fuel economy on a loose running basis. Its useful as the check tells you how the car is doing with it’s general health. Dragging brakes, carb tune, even your driving technique. Each time I fill up any car I zero the Trip Meter. I then just note the fuel in and the mileage on the meter at the next fill up. And so on. If you need to a small notebook and pencil (I find the pens never work) in the car (it is useful anyway) or type into the phone as a note. Do it a few times or regularly to average out errors from filling differently.
My saloon is a 2 litre injected and does around 34 MPG in general motoring. The 2+2 is a 1600 carb and long in the tooth. It will still do 35mpg general and 38 MPG on a run. I normally see the gauge on the 2+2 at around 1/3rd when I have done 210 miles or so. It has the 40 litre tank, the very top and very bottom of the tank does not seem to read linearly. But my car has always been fine mid range. If I really top it up the gauge may not move off the top stop for around 30 miles or so. From my experience this is normal behaviour for most cars until recently, my Jag XF fuel gauge uses some sort of smoky magic and a crystal ball it seems and always knows the truth ………... If you are only getting 100 miles from 34-40 litre tank there must be something wrong or you are always on short journeys with choke on a carb. That is where fuel gets chewed up big time. But then the simple test is the petrol smell from the exhaust when running. Hope that helps. Derek > On 8 Jan 2016, at 13:57, SMIDG3T <[email protected]> wrote: > > Hm.
