See how much fuel you are getting into the tank.
I think it's 34 litres pre 1986 and 40 litres after that.
The early tank has the fuel sender on the side of the tank and the later one has it on the top.

Since your engine is injection it's almost certainly the 40L tank.

I get about 180 miles out of my 40L tank before it gets low but my fuel gauge isn't a perfect match to the sender so there may be quite a bit more in there.
That's on a 2.0L turbo engine.

Yes, it is quite possible that the tank isn't full, especially if you always use the same garage, some pumps click off a lot earlier than others. Wait 15 seconds and try again and you may find you can get quite a lot more fuel in. The only way to be sure it's totally full is to fill it up so you can see the fuel level in the filler pipe. Make sure you have a good seal on the fuel cap though or you may loose most of the petrol on the first corner.

Thanks for all that information. I keep forgetting to note the important things here. The engine in my car is a 1999 Mondeo Zetec. Still, getting what I get out of my tank is useless so there must be something wrong.

Is there a chance that when filling up, and when the pump clicks that in actual fact it's not in full? When I filled up last time it did click and so maybe this time around the tank is actually full? Is that possible?
