Thanks for the input, Troy.

I was a little sloppy in my trials and errors. My "fix" involved deleting the 
_spotlight user for the Desktop in Get Info at the same time as the ~/Desktop 
.DS_Store file. (Btw, am I causing unforeseen trouble for myself?)

Are there any diagnostics I can send from console to help the cause?
