I’ve been experiencing this since QC changed to Apple’s “new document model” (I think it was QC 4.6, came with OS 10.8.)
It’s such an obvious bug I was sure Apple would fix it before long, but QC doesn’t seem to get much attention now, so we’re still living with the bug years later. I haven’t found a work-around beyond the one you mention.
